Struck Percussion

SP1  Flint pebbles struck together using hand as resonator.
Used in For a Singer and Wheat 1.

SP2-SP3  Two instruments, each consisting of a pebble resting on aresonator.
It is struck with another pebble held in the hand. The two instruments vary in size.
Used in Wheat 4; one only in Marine Residua.

SP4-SP6  Three pairs of glass marbles (various sizes). (Same as SP1 but with glass
marbles replacing the pebbles.)
Used in A Monkey’s Paw and Broken Music.

SP7-SP8  Two instruments, being a development of SP4-SP6 above. Each instrument has
a resonator and a  glass marble but each marble now rests on a flexible membrane of balloon
rubber. These membranes cover themouth of the resonators. The marbles are struck with
other marbles held in the hand.
Used in Beneath the Fired City, Finding Refuge in the Remains,
The Fish that became the Sun, Out of the Shattered Shadows 1.

SP9-SP15  Seven steel bell plates, to be struck with vibraphone beaters.
Three are required in Wheat; one in Marine Residua and in Broken Music; another
three in A Monkey’s Paw; five in The Fish that became the Sun.

SP16-SP17  Two iron bells of different sizes (originally from E. Africa but modified).
Used in A Monkey’s Paw, Broken Music and The Fish that became the Sun.

SP18  Untuned iron cowbell (originally from E. Africa but modified).
Used in Broken Music and The Fish that became the Sun.

SP19  Shell case chime (brass, medium sized  military shell).
Used in Wheat 6.

SP20-SP21  Two sets of seven heavy steel rings. Each set has its own tuning and
the rings suspended on a frame.
Used in Marine Residua; five selected rings used in Finding Refuge in the Remains.

SP22-SP23  Two sets of five tuned slate gongs. Each set has its own tuning, the
slates suspended on a frame and played with glockenspiel beaters.
Used in A Monkey’s Paw.

SP24  Set of seven tuned slate gongs suspended on a frame.
Used in Finding Refuge in the Remains.

SP25-SP26  Two sets of seven tuned slate gongs. Each set has its own
tuning and its slates suspended on a frame.
Used in The Fish that became the Sun.

SP27 Three tuned slate gongs.
Used in Archaeology.

SP28 Two tuned slate gongs.
Used in Broken Music.

SP29-SP38  Ten glass gongs.
One used in Broken Music and Finding Refuge in the Remains;
three in Marine Residua; five in A Monkey’s Paw; six in The Fish that became the Sun.

SP39  Suspended sheet of plate glass 3 feet x 9 inches.
Used in Broken Music.

SP40  Set of 13 Indian chatthi (unglazed earthenware bowls) tuned with water
and struck with hard beaters.
Used in Contained in a Strange Garden.

SP41  Set of 5 glazed porcelain bowls, tuned with water and struck with light sticks.
Used in Contained in a Strange Garden.

SP42  Domestic household tea plate. Struck with a very hard beater.
Used in Towards the Darkness.

SP43-SP44  Two pairs of jingles detached from a commercial tambourine.
Each pair suspended from a cord.
Used in Apocrypha.

SP45  Set of five pieces of untanned goatskin, each with metal mounting
for stand attachment. These skins are struck with bamboo canes.
Used in After the Rain.

SP46  Leather cushion beaten with a cane.
Used in Marine Residua, Finding Refuge in the Remains and The Fish that became the Sun.

SP47-SP50  Four bamboo slit-drums, various sizes.
One used in Broken Music; a large one in Finding Refuge in the Remains.
A pair are required in Wheat.

SP51-SP57  Seven pairs of heavy percussion sticks (various woods).
Three pairs used in Marine Residua; two pairs in Music for Two Performers,
Broken Music
and Finding Refuge in the Remains; four pairs in A Monkey’s Paw;
seven pairs in The Fish that became the Sun.

SP58  Pair of light percussion sticks (hardwood).
Used in Finding Refuge in the Remains.

SP59  Plywood box, 1 metre cube, three sound holes on one side.
Struck with heavy wooden beaters and also tapped with metal thimble.
Used in Resonances of Ancient Sins, Finding Refuge in the Remains, Out of the Shattered Shadows 1 and 2.
